Life on Manchester - extremely minor spoiler for a very quick scene

The first time I watched the episode where Sam pours pudding and claims he thought it was horseradish, I accepted his mind wasn't on the food or the conversation. Watching it again it seems a very odd mistake unless it happens to be something unique to life in Manchester during the 70s.

On this side of the Atlantic pond there's no way tapioca pudding would be at the table unless it was ordered with the meal and equally hard to believe horseradish would be set out on the tables in a workplace cafeteria.

I know both versions of Life on Mars requires having fun with 70s references - does anyone know if the pudding, and horseradish were common table items back then, or pudding used to be, now horseradish is?

Or was it really just a stretch to show us how distracted Sam was a the moment?

Tapioca pudding would be a very 1970's dish here. Horseradish sauce is still very much part of the cuisine. As I remember it Sam had collected the food from the service counter and discovered his mistake when he got to the table and tasted the food.
