Change in mindset

I watched this film this afternoon, since I was off work for the day. In two hours, I went from someone who was considering an application with recruitment and perhaps also had a naive expectation that it would be the change I was looking for in work, to completely feeling an abhorrence towards the military lifestyle and what it stands for and can do to you.

War. War Never Changes.

I just watched this film on a lazy sunday afternoon, and found your post oddly affecting. I wonder what you did instead?

I'm glad of the change in perspective. That's what a good film does - it affects your life at a personal level.

Yes, it's probably best you didn't enlist at all if watching a movie swayed you that much. Might as well go join the fonking Peace Corps.

You do know that the military largely wants people who can't think for themselves, right? Why do you think their is such an emphasis on making all recruits feel like they're exactly the same?

If you're friends with anyone who served and they don't mind being honest with you about it, they'll tell you that it's not how the recruiters make it out to be. Frankly, more people need to be like the OP and look further than the surface when it comes to potentially joining.

The military can be great if you want to learn a trade or get an education. Just make sure you get everything in writing before you sign anything. And running it by a lawyer would be smart.

My cousin became a nurse through the Air Force (I don't know any specifics on how that works). She had lots of job prospects when she got out.

A buddy of mine went into the Navy and ended up working in ordnance. But knowing how to work with bombs didn't lead to any job opportunities in civilian life.
