A complete and utter disaster of a film.
Firstly, let me be one to say that, as a film student, I ofter go overboard when I make reviews on the more technical and aesthetic variations of any particular film. For the purposes of this response, I will try to boil it down to the essentials. Just when I though that movies like "Soul Plane" and "In The Mix" constituted some of the worst films ever to come out of the African American comedy arena, we come to "Norbit". I won't beat a dead horse and try to incite people by making the assumption that all African American comedies are complete mindless idiocy that only promote stereotypes, but there is really not much good to say about this film.
I have to ask myself if anyone involved in this project even bothered to read the script prior to signing on for this one. I am curious as to what the representation of the leads was thinking in urging their clients to involve themselves in such utter nonsense. With a host of talent abound in this film, why did if have to be this bad? Many films that fall into this genera, make the critical mistake of trying to use crudity and tastelessness, in place of actual comedy. This certainly fits the bill. I am not one to normally complain about having spent time on my couch watching a particular film, but this one was painful and borderline unwatchable. I suppose you may be able to get a chuckle or two out of your average 7 year old with Down Syndrome, but that may be a stretch.
The direction and production is equally as bad as other aspects of the film, which only makes a bad situation far worse. I have seen plenty of horrible scripts out there get partially redeemed by brilliant direction and cinematography, but that certainly is not the case here.
Overall, a complete waste of time. I took the liberty of looking around on some other posters on this film, and was glad to see other people agree on how bad it is. It is never a good idea to reward bad film making and horrible writing. Perhaps by calling this trash what it is, The writers guild will be more inclined spend a bit more time bringing quality cinematic work to the forefront.
