Some of these characters seem awfully like actual actors from the 50s.

One looks just like Lucille Ball. Or am I way off?

All the characters were supposed to be based on real people according to the trivia section here in IMDB. Tatum Channing was supposed to be based on Gene Kelly.

Yes along with a satire on the studio system.

I would prefer "homage" to "parody", but no matter.

What I enjoyed even more was the LOOK of all those minor character actors, who really seemed like they could have been in 1940s or 50s studio movies.

What can be asserted without evidence can also be dismissed without evidence.
