A filmmakers film

A superb parody of Hollywood circa 1950 and a subtle morality play as well. Those involved in picture making will get the Hollywood dialect, but those who have no clue, the film be quite tedious and even, gasp, pretentious. I love all attention to detail in the sets, wardrobe, acting, various backstories and subplots.. I rated it 7.5/10

What Hollywood "dialect"? I'm not involved in filmmaking in any way and I liked it just fine. i imagine that anyone who is at all familiar with MGM era films in the 50s will enjoy it.

The late Roger Ebert gave this movie 4/4 stars, and that alone makes it worth watching for me.

In any case I liked it just fine, well done. I pretty much love all Coen Brothers films, Fargo being my all-time favorite.

Ebert rated nothing, he died in 2013, his website is still active but someone else wrote the review.

I didn't like the film, I'll give it a second try, but just because it deals with Hollywood and filmmaking doesn't make it any more enjoyable. Simple question: what's the story about? Hollywood? Making films? Stars? Big deal, there's gotta be at least the illusion of a plot, of something happening or a point to be made in a way or another, not just "stuff that reminds of old-school Hollywood".

I don't expect the Coen brothers' to produce masterpieces of clarity but I don't recall any of their films that didn't have a specific story to tell, and focusing on specific characters.

Darth Vader is scary and I  The Godfather
