Mac is too gay
Don't get me wrong, if they want to evolve his character in that direction, that's fine but it seems there's been a massive change in mannerisms and how he speaks etc. It's quite jarring really.

shareYep. Puts me off big time. Mac was my favorite character but he's so not Mac now. Throws off the chemistry of the whole team.
shareCouldn't disagree more. Of course, I'm obviously a huge fan. People would be bitching about "beating a dead horse blah blah blah" if they didn't change the characters and do new things. People critique every show like that. They "change too much" or "never change". I don't think it throws off the chemistry at all. Mac is just finally embracing who he has always been and, therefore, many of his classic "Mac-isms" are basically no longer present; the pent up rage, etc. His character has done the majority of changing. Everyone else is still basically the same old gang, and that's just fine with me.
But, they know what you will say before you do. "It won't play in middle America, but... Screw it! We'll jam it down their throats till they enjoy it!"
I also don't like how they've gone full on with Dennis being a rapey serial killer. The show used to have a lot more subtly. When things are simply stated instead of implied, it's not as funny.
shareYeah, see, I love that too. We're just different. I love that they made those "implications" early, noticed that fans were paying attention and loved what they were doing, and now have confirmed Mac's sexuality, and basically confirmed Dennis' stuff, and embraced it all as a concrete part of the show. I'm not so sure that being subtle was ever a goal. They were breadcrumbs to an inevitable truth, in a modern comedy, no less. And I think it's as smart and funny as it's ever been.
shareI certainly don't hate the show now or think it's jumped the shark or any such thing. I just preferred the old style of it. I may change my mind one day when I watched the whole thing start to finish.

Hey, thank you for the kind words. These days, there's only a few shows that I'll champion. Total "fanboy", but I truly feel that the show and the gang deserve it. I can try really hard and not be able to name a better modern American comedy. Though, I did hear "Curb" was back on, and I'll have to catch up, but even then, I think I still always preferred "Sunny".
shareI noticed that too. I watched them turn his character into "the gay guy" of the show over the last few seasons, probably, ironically for a show like this, to be more PC, but this new episode I was thinking "Mac was never this flamboyant".
He was flailing his hands all over the place. It's a pretty big change in his character, but they've already changed him so much from who he originally was, so why not take it all the way I guess. Haha.
I'll tell you another beef I have with the later show. And i'm not sure who's writing the bulk of the episodes anymore. But there's no longer distinct voices for the characters. For example, Mac will constantly utter a line that's clearly a Dennis line, or a Charlie line, but it's like they gave it to Mac just cause it was time for his character to have something to say in the scene. There's tonal crossovers like this all the time in the gang dynamic. Now you could write this off as people living together and just picking up each other's mannerisms, that's definitely a thing in real life. But this is a show, an art form, and it's simply sloppy writing.
