Charlie is actually a pretty talented musician. Both of his parents are into music, with his mother teaching it. When you see Charlie playing the keyboard on the show...that's actually him doing it. He can actually play.
If you go through the outtakes, you can see Charlie freestyling on the keyboard and making up lyrics on the fly.
