These Message Boards Are Shutting Down. Say Something.

At this point, I'm not sure where the best place is to make your voice heard.

There's a petition here that might be worth signing:

https://www.ipetitions.com/petition/petition-to-keep-the-imdb-messageboards-going

You can also say something here

https://getsatisfaction.com/imdb

The bottom line, though is that:

IMDb's message boards are no longer providing a positive, useful experience for the vast majority of our more than 250 million monthly users worldwide

Simply isn't true. This community has it's faults, as everyone here well knows, but to classify it as unuseful to it's participants is absolutely ridiculous.

Say something.

Yep. I'm glad this is happening. Maybe it's good after all. Most of the post around here consist of "The worst show ever", or "Religious propaganda", "Why is this overrated pretentious movie is rated above 8"

Most people come here because they genuinely want to passionately discuss about a movie they like. They came in with a positive experience only to come out of it with a negative feelings after being told their taste is bad or being chewed by someone who just wanna pick a fight with them. That's why I rather steer clear from any message board before or after watching a movie because it'll ruin my experience. The trolls thought they have won but actually they're the one who are losing because they definitely gonna be most upset when they found out their 'spectators' and the arena they're competing to draw attention to themselves are gone.

I'm pretty pissed about it. That social media crap is great if you want to talk about the latest movie blockbuster or brainless reality show, but that's not why I come to IMDB. Where else can you go to connect with fans of obscure stuff?

In any case I despise social media and do everything to avoid it.

Anyone know of any alternate discussion boards for IASIP?

HynocraticGoat ~  Hello! I'm not sure if you remember me, but we've posted in the past. (I think it was the Buffy board.)

I also hate that the IMDb boards are closing  and I wanted to let you know one of the places the Buffy board (as well as a number of other boards, from what I've seen) is(are) considering. Any additions/comments/ideas would be most welcome!

IMDB v2.0:

IMDB v2.0, Buffy thread until we get a subforum:

It's not to my taste (although I have joined) but it is a near duplicate of IMDb, albeit a much more high tech version. I have another place in mind for BTVS/Buffyverse ( www.bronzebeta.com ). I'm currently composing posts for the Buffy board and the Bronze.

If you haven't yet, you should swing by the Buffy board. It's like "Old Home Week" or Homecoming (when everyone goes back to their high school -- NOT the Buffy episode!)

Perhaps I will see you at one of the "new" places! If not, best regards!

Hi! Your name's definitely familiar, I think it was on the Firefly or Serenity boards?

Thanks for those imdb2 links! It looks good. Easily the best of the alternate sites I've seen so far. I'll have to sign up. Bronzebeta looks good too.

I signed up for another alt site, started a couple threads, and almost immediately drew a troll response. (!) The only one so far. Perfect example of why I don't post much now. But I still check in regularly on my favorite boards and read what others are saying.

Nice to hear from you! Thanks again for the info!

There's no denying that in the past few years the boards have become increasingly toxic, but proclaiming there being no positive experiences is misleading at best.

I, like Goat said above, come here primarily to learn about and discuss obscure titles which have no collective following on social media, none of which I use regularly, incidentally. For instance, I recently watched, and came here to peruse the board for The Phantom from 10,000 Leagues (1955). How much interaction for that am I going to find on Instagram?

What's needed isn't eliminating the forums, but moderating them effectively. That costs them money, though. Shuffling members over to social media replete with advertisements and data mining earns them revenue. This was almost purely a fiduciary decision.

It's been fun while it lasted, but R.I.P. IMDb. I'm out.

That's a shame. Rarely do I visit the boards of films; my interest in IMDB has mostly been to discuss the handful of shows that mean something to me. Having that discussion with others who feel just as passionately about each show is the best part of this site. Sure there are a few trolls, but more often than not people want a community for their love of film/television, etc. Oh well, then I'll just regress because I feel I made myself perfectly redundant.

There are plenty of boards that are disastrous, filled with trolls, but this one has always been pretty good. As usual the few ruin it for the many.

reply

It sucks. I always liked popping in and out of the message boards whenever I was bored or had free time. I officially have no use for IMDb anymore. All the articles and stuff like that are just links to other websites. Without the message boards this site is irrelevant.

reply

Supremely boneheaded and Charlie-like move to shut them down, but then I realized it's all about the $$$$. They must be losing money by keeping them or something. I highly doubt they give a crap about the actual forums and users.

Anywho, haven't really cared for this season and it's already halfway over.

reply

I might not post on the boards very often anymore, but it's the first (and only) place I go to check what people think about whatever show/movie I want to have in-depth discussions about, especially obscure or older shows.
