This movie works so well only because the filmmaker did a great job of making Alarcon's character into a sympathetic figure instead of just an object of sexual fantasy the way you get in so many stalker type movies. It's hard to empathize with the victims in movies like that because they're often portrayed as nothing more than sexual objects. Whereas in this movie she was a real human being with a well-defined character and it was impossible not to care. Hanks's character likewise wasn't some over the top super-stalker, but could have been so many people that we've met at school or work. The fact that the movie wasn't just another over-produced glossy Hollywood thriller but instead has an indie quality to it makes it more accessible to the audience and helps draw them in and relate to it. It really worked for me. Creepy and disturbing. And sad.
