Thinking about making my friend watch it without subs the first time...

it would work actually, dialogs werent that important, you would understand the movie.

I watched it without subs recently, and a lot of the metaphors and recurring themes were missed, but it allows you to focus more on the visual.

I watched it with the Mandarin subtitles on. Whole different movie.

I've watched it with and without subtitles. I love it both ways! No subtitles means you get to appreciate the visual effect of the movie.

I watched it WITH the first time. At least once after without.

One film I watched the first time without subtitles was, ironically another Gibson direction, was The Passion Of The Christ.

Since Mel originally intended to release it without subtitles, and figuring the story was already well known and would be easy to follow, it was!
