I watched this finally and thought wow ..
Its epic and great. This to me is an art film as well as action plus show's mel has balls to be daring in film which is what you need in film ... the jungle and to use unknown actors and tackle such an epic .

He needs to step right back into directing - he has an art for it, regardless of one's opinion on his films
Watching this makes you think could not be directed by such a hollywood action type guy ok braveheart was great but it had that glossy hollywood style .. this if someone did not tell me mel directed it i would never have guessed that. Because im used to mel's films where he plays a tough guy etc. And such a hollywood heavy.
Looking at his acting and way you would not think mel had another talent to bring a film like this To the world.
You should watch both Man Without A Face and Passion of the Christ, both Gibson films without gloss.

Yep, and what makes it such a fine film is the lessons Gibson learned on "Braveheart" he puts to use in "Apocalypto." So many times the director makes the same miscues again & again. Not so with Gibson. Whereas BH stutters and creeps, Apocalypto is true to it's premise.
