.. The hero is saved by a twist of fate. I've got to the part with the sacrifices, when Jaguar Paw is saved because of the eclipse and it's probably one of the most annoying things I've seen in a film in a long time. If a hero is to be saved, he should be saved on his own merits, not because of a fluke... Makes him no different, stronger or braver than any of the other characters.
The screenplay wants you to believe in this, but the intention is really different. It's all about reality and luck.Nothing supernatural.Even after they killed the Jaguar, Zero Wolf said to his crew that those are supernatural *beep* and they should keep moving. The movie makers want us to believe that there is "Bad omen" involved but aprat from the sun everything is pretty much a coinsidence. For example, only 2 (if we dont count zero wolf son) were killed by Jaguar Paw.One was bitten by a poison snake, another one died killed by frenzied jaguar, one was stabbed by Zero Wolf and one died in the Cliff Jump.
Actually the movie depicts how naive can be one religgion. They believe in the bad omen for the Jaguar Paw and thats why they are gonna embrase Cortez like a god which will be downfall of their civilisation.
I was just hoping that Jaguar Paw would make good on his own merits - as you say, it was all luck and he had very little to do with his own fate. I found it hard to root for him after the group were picking on Blunted but I gave him a go because I'm sure all he wanted was his family to be safe, but I don't think he really did anything other than get lucky. I thought Blunted was far more heroic than Jaguar Paw... he was the one who more or less sacrificed himself to let Jaguar Paw escape - at least he showed true courage whereas Jaguar Paw just had the luck of the draw. I do wonder what happened to all of the other people who were kidnapped, and also what happened to them after the Spanish (?) arrived - hopefully Jaguar Paw and his family had luck on their side then too.
