One of the strongest movies of the last decade

Mel Gibson is such an admirable filmmaker. He seems to have little interest in making a movie that is not about life and death, about the basic human condition, and about violence in human nature: Braveheart, The Passion of the Christ, Apocaplyto. We need more filmmakers like this! In fact, speaking of violence in human nature, many aspects of Apocalypto reminded me of Cormac McCarthy's great novel Blood Meridian: the indian culture, the prophet (that young girl who speaks the prophesy), the sacrifices, the heads mounted on spikes, the violence, the white Spanish bringing their religion and their gunpowder to the older culture of the indians at the end, etc. It's a powerful and terrifying film.

Please Mel, direct another movie!

Couldn't agree more and not only that you feel like you're on the scene! You can tell he loves directing.

I see your Blood Meridian comparison. When you see all the lizards tied up and being sold in that one village in Apocalypto totally reminded me of the villages The Boy would walk through in Blood Meridian.

I'd say Mel should direct Blood Meridian, but I also don't know if it should ever be turned into a movie. Part of what makes Mccarthy's novels so great in the first place is his digression and reveling in diction. But who knows, maybe it can be made. The Coen Bros took No Country and made that into a great movie.

Totally agree with you. I'm also of two minds about BM. I don't think it should be made into a movie—how could you possibly do it justice! Maybe have McCarthy's prose scroll down the screen, all 337 pgs of it! Franco's Child of God kind of ruined for me my second fav McCarthy novel. But, on the other hand, it would be awesome if Mel made BM into a movie (or at least did some BM-esque Western!) You're right, though, No Country is such a great movie (of a minor McCarthy book), so the Coen's Bros showed it can be done!
