Would love to see another pre-Colombian movie

I thought Apocalypto was an overall good film, but I would love to see a film that deals with life in a Mesoamerican civilization in the same way the TV show Rome did.

The problem with Apocalypto is that it really wasn't centered on the Mayans, it was centered on Jaguar Paw's rural tribe. We didn't really get to spend much time in the Mayan city.

There's no doubt that the Mayans and similar cultures were brutal in regards to human sacrifice and war, but there was more to them then that. They also had brilliant astronomers, scholars, architects, etc. It would be nice to shed some light on that side of the story other than people's hearts getting cut out in front of a frenzied crowd.

Imagine a movie that is set in Tenochitlan(aka Mexico City) when it was at its peak.

Although he mentioned the Mayans, he did say he wanted to see other movies about Mesoamerican societies. That would include both Aztecs and Mayans as well as many other smaller civilizations in the area...

Yea, but this movie(in my opinion) took the Mayan and Aztecs cultures and essentially combined them in this movie; the mass sacrifice seen in the movie(and also probably the brutal oppression of neighboring tribes/polities) was definatly more of an Aztec than Mayan thing.. In one way, I use this movie as a way to see how the Aztecs were viewed thru the eyes of their enemy tribes.

Wow, thank you so much! I had also been looking for movies about precolumbian America, this database is amazing!

It is implied in "Apocalypto", where you see the construction site and the making of limestone/plaster, plus the camera pans around to see those magnificent temples. Note Jaguar Paw's and his people's reaction to the city sites.

Plus the priests and the king knew about the eclipse.

Thank you carrotpie, great list. One film that I remember is The Kings of the Sun (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0057225/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1) with Yul Brynner. I think it will fail on the historical accuracy score, but is a good pre-columbian adventure.

Thanks for the list.

I loved this film not only as a technical marvel but also because it dealt with a very rare subject of prehispanic America. I too would love to see another film about the Mayans, Aztecs, or Olmecs. I believe there was a film that dealt with Precolombian natives starring Christopher Plummer as the head chief or king 'The Royal Hunt of the Sun.'
