MovieChat Forums > Apocalypto (2006) Discussion > all they had to do was call them Aztecs,...

all they had to do was call them Aztecs, and it would have been fine....

but nope. they called them mayans and then have spaniards show up. wtf? did Mel never read a history book? the mayan civilization was gone before anyone from europe ever showed up in mexico. the whole reason nobody knows what happened to the mayans is cause nobody who could write it down, witnessed it. conquistadors never met mayans

You have no idea what the heck you are talking about. Please no one listen to this greatly misinformed person. Great movies like this always have idiots spreading false information. The Spanish most certainly did interact with and fight the Mayans in the Yucatan.

You are wrong my friend!

" Initially established during the Pre-Classic period (c. 2000 BC to AD 250), according to the Mesoamerican chronology, many Maya cities reached their highest state of development during the Classic period (c. AD 250 to 900), and continued throughout the Post-Classic period until the arrival of the Spanish."

In the movie they are well characterized and during the fantastic visual shots of the sacrifice at the top of piramyd the main sorcerer claims for the god "kukulkán"...the mexica (because the therm aztec is wrong) name for the same god its Quetzacoatl!

Huh? Aztec were just people that lived in Mexico. You act like they were a tribe.

I learned about "The Spanish Conquest of the Yucatan" in the 9th grade. What school did you go to? I literally just typed that in word for word and you get millions of Google results.

The Mayans resisted Spanish invasion for almost 300 years, so I'm pretty sure they met them.

A PhD of history for Mayans was on a podcast that talks about historical accuracy of Apocalypto.

He agreed with 99,5%; he said Mel was right on except for two tiny things: something about water and something on a wall, that's all. He LOVED the film too.

Yea, Mel knows what he's doing. He went from nothing to an almost billionaire. He's not stupid. 

Just shows how little is known about those ancient civilizations. Hollywood was never known for accurate historical films, but this one at least has no socio-political agenda like so many do.

What podcast was that?
