PERFECTION

That's pretty much all I can say. I cannot express enough how incredible this film is. Truly a masterpiece. You literally feel like you are in this movie observing it all. And I still can't believe I was actually watching actors and not real tribal people!! I've seen it probably 8 or 9 times and I'm still speechless!!

I agree and every time I see it, which I just watched it again, I cant help but feel that this is a masterpiece that was robbed of some awards because Mel Gibson directed it.

I agree! I just didn't mention it before...but I definitely think he was very much deserving of any/every award possible for it. But you know how the "awards" go...lots of other factors involved, unfortunately. I thought The Passion he did a few years before this one was just as stunning!

Ha, my mind always brings me back to this movie and I rarely rewatch movies more than once every couple years or more, unless they are my favorites. I see this at least twice a year.

I am a history buff and like the depiction of the Mayan culture here despite a few liberties or exaggerations some might say. It has a lot of other things I like; tragedy, fighting, evil, good, redemption, and rebuilding. Plus I think Jaguar Paw's wife is hot, really hot, and it is strange to me because we don't really see much or hear much from her and she is not my typical physical type so not sure what it is, but I like.

I'm with you. It's great film making: cinematography, editing, music, acting. What cinema is made for.

reply

I agree. The cinematography and use of color and light is breath taking!

It does so many things well, and puts you right into that culture and life and makes it accessible while also reminding you of the differences. Though it depicts so many atrocities, it does not do so in an over-the-top way. It's more of an experience than just a regular movie.

Passion was one of the highest grossing films of all time, and Mel directed it. Braveheart won Best Director and Film. Apocalypto won many awards too. Mel is a genius, and the movie world would not be the same without him.

I hope he continues to act and direct for as long as he can.

Mel is going to be directing Hacksaw Ridge, a true story about a war hero.

I recommend watching the documentary about this guy and, knowing Mel's previous works, the movie about him is going to be awesome.

@Bubble,

I saw that documentary and it's SO good. He was a fascinating man, and Mel will do this film great.

One of the best movies I've seen in my entire life. Just seen it again with comments from Mel Gibson and another dude that worked on it. 10/10

The commentary is great. And, I agree with what you said.

Tarantino said it was the best film that year. Duvall said he was blown away, and it was the best film he'd seen in 25 years. Spike Lee has it on his most essential 50 films of all time list.

It's truly a masterpiece of writing, directing, cinematography, acting, editing, score, etc.

It's a travesty that Mel was not nominated for Best Director of this film. NO ONE even came close, or Best Picture.

It needs to get the respect that it deserves as a classic.

What amazed me about this movie the first time I saw it is how it constantly surprised me, which is something so few movies are able to do these days. The only thing I was able to predict was that the happy villagers scenes at the beginning were a set-up for a tragic turn of events. But beyond that, I found the movie entirely unpredictable

Such a great movie and tremendous rewatch value! Most hyper violent movies I watch are not always very rewatchable for me. The violence kind of can be a bit depressing when its a bit too raw. However, this movie makes the pain and violence worth sitting through because the story and characters and performances are all directly elevated by the fearlessness in depicting violence in an honest manner. It is one of Mel Gibson's best assets as a director. The violence in his movies have a point and elevate the emotional impact.
