The remaining children

There was a group of children left alive that followed the group for a while' and the eldest reassured their mother that she would look after them. Wouldn't they assumably return back to their village and try to rebuild? That is the only home they know. If they had returned, then Jaguar Paw's woman could have called to them for help. Also, at the end, they seemed to make no effort to find any remaining children from their village- some who may have been siblings of Jaguar Paw- did they not feel responsible towards them?

I think it was pretty strongly implied the children had little chance of survival. At the beginning of the film they are not shown doing anything productive and mostly just playing around. They would have no survival skills and likely starve or be killed pretty quickly. I think that scene was just to make the overall situation that much sadder by having the mothers see their children doomed to certain death. Fantastic movie and I was really glad that Gibson didn't hold back on gore and violence. A rarity for a considerably large budget Hollywood film produced by an A List guy.

Also the mother in law. Maybe. She made her way back to the kids as well

I doubt it. She probably remained a homeless lady in the city. I don't think she'd be able to make it back on her own at her age.

How do you know they made no effort? We only see one shot of them after the wife gets out of the hole. Who knows what they were doing when the cameras were off.
