In the end of the movie we see Portuguese sail in those boats, but I think were Spanish getting there first, because Maias were slaughtered and that was what Spanish do, Portuguese did something very different, trade and buy that people slowly. For some reason they speak Portuguese all over Brazil and in some parts of India.

Portugal and Spain divided up the New World before they even knew what was really there. The had an East-West dividing line for new discoveries, but most of the new lands were west of the line, so Spain got them. Brazil was farther East, so it went to Portugal. That's why they speak Portuguese there to this day.
