He finally figured a way up using the mask as leverage in the side of the boat. All of a sudden he got clever?
Well, remember that this wasn't his boat and he'd be in big trouble if he damaged it. The other guy tried to wedge the knife into the ladder hatch, but Dan killed him.

It's better to be "in trouble" for damaging the boat then dead for not trying something!
shareWell, you think that and I think that, but Dan was obsessed with keeping up his image, even if it meant the death of his friends and himself.
In fact, when he was inches away from climbing up on the ladder, he let himself float away and die rather than face the fallout from "borrowing" the boat and then causing the death of up to four of his friends.
