My ex boyfriend and I dated for almost 10 years (just background, so you can imagine I'd seen him in various athletic and dangerous situations).
One time, on an ostensibly calm day in Pismo Beach, he and I decided to swim out to the end of the pier and back. The waves in that area don't generally get over 2.5, maybe 3 feet. Anyways, we're halfway out there, and a massive undertow hits. I immediately float on my back and backstroke with the current heading inwards. He panicked, swam over to me, and GRABBED me and pulled me under. We were both very strong swimmers, had been on swim teams etc (I was also still a certified life guard). I have never seen him behave like that before or since, but he was terrified and almost drowned BOTH of us, even though calmer heads would have easily made their way back in with the current. At one point, we were almost on the bottom (about 20 feet deep) and I scratched and bit him to make him let go. I had to get air for myself, then tried to put my arms under his armpits while he struggled, until he was so exhausted and breathless that he went almost limp (he had a good 50 pounds and six inches of height on me).
It was terrifying, and we were both used to the CA coast with lots of years of experience. I can only imagine what would happen to a person who got scared WITHOUT any training.
Oh, one other thing - that friggin' B*TCH with the life vest. How selfish do you have to be? Someone is swimming towards land, another person is dying of a knife wound, her own husband has a fractured skull, and yet she can't even share the vest for a minute?? I wanted to punch her.
They're coming to get you, Barbara!
