The history on Pencil Trick is problematic.
I just read the article:
An Oral History of The Dark Knight’s Pencil Trick
https://www.vulture.com/2018/12/the-dark-knight-pencil-trick-an-oral-history.html
It's very problematic for me:
1. "At the end of the day, you just shoot it twice: one with the pencil and one without the pencil. Then the edit does its magic."
What? Why shoot twice and "magic edit"? The clip is one shot without edit. And why bother shoot twice?
2. "We did a couple of half-speed rehearsals just to get the hand action of my right hand sweeping across, taking the pencil as my body was going down, and my head striking the blank surface. It was a little hairy, because the pencil’s stuck in the table. If, for some reason, I didn’t get my hand in time, we wouldn’t be having this conversation. Well, possibly through a Ouija board."
Why ask the actor to take the pencil? In the clip, it can be easily done by someone else. And it's impossible for it to be "hairy," the pencil is impossible to still be there.
3. "digitally, you can never really re-create an IMAX image."
The statement has two problems: One, that scene is not shot in IMAX. Two, you can't digitally re-create IMAX image??? The Dark Knight has a lot of CGI, the best example is Two-Face, the face is CGI! Is he drunk or something?
