Star Wars: A Rogue One Story
Thoughts? Art direction was fantastic and Vader was great for what little time he had.

shareChallenging Empire for the best SW movie ever as far as I'm concerned. Loved the art direction and the world building in general. That world felt lived in. They made a concerted effort to get away from the bluescreen madness of Lucas and it showed.
I also enjoyed TFA, but this was leagues ahead of it. It had a few nods but much less nostalgic pandering to the audience. The characters (as well as the universe itself) had more depth to them than anything since perhaps Empire. It was gritty, it was real. Nice to see the Empire on street level dealing with insurgents instead of mowing people down on a battle front over and over again. Unlike TFA, you had a better sense of the political and military power structure in the galaxy with this flick, I cannot stress enough the difference that makes with this kind of storytelling.
The new characters were all fantastic, and while there was humor, none of it was forced. The new droid is hands down my favorite in the history of the franchise.
Major spoilers ahead
I love that they had the balls to kill everyone. All of the central characters died, how many movies can you say that about; how many franchises would dare do that with the potential for spinoff sequels and merchandising? The amount of money they left on the table in order to tell a more powerful story is staggering. I thought that's what should happen heading into the film, but I wasn't sure they'd go that dark. Hats off to them for making that bold decision.
I will say it wasn't perfect. CGI Tarkin was terrible, just terrible. He looked like, well, a CGI character surrounded by genuine actors. I couldn't believe how much screen time they gave such a poorly rendered digital character. I also thought Vader was wonky. I appreciated them giving his eyes the red tint they had in ANH, but something about the costume overall seemed cheap. And James Earl Jones's line delivery was off. It's like they did one take for all of his lines and the director was afraid to critique him. (And since when does Vader do puns? He has badass mic-drop lines throughout the trilogy, but puns?)
Those were really the only negatives that stood out to me, it's an incredible film from top to bottom. I'm heading back to see it again on Friday, it's definitely worth a rewatch on the big screen.
The future is in the hands of a man who has none.(As in no future, as opposed to no hands.)
I really liked it, and if all of it somehow sucked it still would've been worth it for the last Vader scene. But it didn't, very good overall.
