I get the feeling that neither of those stories were actually true, the Joker in TDK seemed like he would say anything in the spirit of keeping things interesting/amusing for himself. I'm fairly confident that he would've made up an entirely new narrative had Nolan decided to let the Joker/Batman scene play out a little bit longer toward the end, right before he's tossed off the roof of the building.
