I saw this at the Dublin Film Festival on Friday the 22nd a day before the world premiere in Glasgow which is a bit odd. I have to say I was disappointed with the film. I thought that the set up was good and the first half of the film kept me interested and was quite funny but it just seemed to descend into a series of silly gorey scenes and lost it's momentum.
I think the horror/comedy genre of film is a hard one to get right and while The Cottage was funny it wasn't remotely scary or tense enough to stand out from other films of this type.
I also saw it at the Dublin Film Festival. I enjoyed it, but as DC said, the first half of the film is better. The dark comedy/hostage part I really liked and then it took a sudden turn. I did not mind the turn at all, but I thought they pulled off the beginning a lot better than the horror part. The turn in genre seemed a bit sharp, like Art School Confidential. I expected it from the short paragraph long description in the DIFF manual, but still it just completely changed pace.
Overall I still highly enjoyed it, as I went in with no expectations and actually no prior knowledge of the film (which is unusual for me). It was also nice to see Serkis in a film where he wasn't a creature.
