I think it's very hard to mix horror and comedy well. The Cottage struggles IMO. Very derivative - Shaun of the Dead style but without Simon Pegg's charisma and the script is amusing but not that amusing. We've seen the freaky farmer look far too often. Acting was pretty mediocre so it needed strength elsewhere. The director's last film (London to Brighton) was also IMO let down by unconvincing acting (more cardboard gangsters and in a film meant to be serious), but it had a very strong opening scene and a strong social content (under-age prostitution) that got it a lot of attention. The Cottage doesn't have enough plusses for me, but I am sure some people are really enjoying it so I hope it gets some positive reviews to balance things up. (I'm afraid my review pulled it to bits rather - I can't in all conscience recommend anyone spend money to see it.)
