Farmer was disfigured and left insane in an industrial accident... government closed his farm down but he escaped into the countryside... the people in the cellar seem to be more of the farmer's immediate 'family'...

reply

the farmer kept his family chained up in the basement for god knows how long and the only source of food was what he gave them i.e humans, hence the reason why the family jumped peter at the end. they didn't see him as a means of escape, they saw him as food. yumyum!

reply

o yeh and wife finds he wears proples faces, tries to escape, gets killed by him. He locks children in basement to stop them escaping too.

reply

it did seem that way, but it almost seemed like they were there willingly, the basement door was not locked in any way..
as for them jumping at him as a source of food - i suppose they could have been desensitised, due to the years of isolation, which forced them to cannibalism, or simply they enjoy eating human flesh, as well as being the only thing they're given, though we only saw them for one night basically, they probably do get out.. we just don't know!

i also think there's some inbred action happening - that could be the source of a sequel (lol) and just adding if no one caught it, one of the girls in the basement was wearing an old fashioned wedding dress, but looked young; pretty weird and most of the people on the screen that you could see in that lost shot, i think about four were female.

it's pretty interesting! and it was a rather fitting ending.

though in the eyes of that weak and battered man, the last place i would go is down into that basement after hearing the noise coming from there (earlier when the farmer was outside!).

OH. another thing, something that aggravated me was the fact he didn't unhook himself by TAKING OFF his jacket!! that would have avoided the fall directly onto his flattened foot, so silly, as well as leaving the pick outside...

it's like people will always make mistakes in life threatening situations (in movies), wouldn't you be incredibly cautious and alert and think strategically?? it's your life we're talking about here, you only get one!

The children in the basement are a reference to another film. If you don't have any knowledge of film what makes you think you can criticise one?

"o yeh and wife finds he wears proples faces, tries to escape, gets killed by him." Is that actually supposed to be English?

reply

what movie does that part reference to? i've heard of children in the attic, but not the basement =P

reply

I cannot currently access that part of my RAM. Driving me bonkers trying to remember. I think it was a scene in 'Shaun of the Dead' but I'm not 100% on that.

reply

Even if it was a refence it made no sense. Why hadn't they escaped - he was hardly agile...

reply

Why would they want to escape? They were his wife and family. I think the scene was from Shaun of the Dead...

reply

....try The Hamiltons for starters.....

reply

there was no point of shaun of the dead with people locked in a basement, im going to call you a tard here...you tard, not out of malicious reasons, but because you were unnecessarily rude to someone at the start of this thread when you don't even know what your talking about yourself...tard :)

reply

Your point being what, exactly? You jump into a five-month old thread and start flapping your mouth for what? Did you miss this morning's dose of your medication?

Get real, sonny.

reply

the farmer's family did not try to escape because they couldn't.
the scene in the basement, just before peter says 'you gotta be joking', pause the film and you will see that both the girls have manacles and chains attached to their right wrists..

I just paused it like you said. Good call. Now I know what the shuffling sounds were from -- chains. LOL, just noticed the Asian guy being eaten.

reply

funny thing was, jonathan (chun yo) was hung up in that position for ages and had bucket after bucket of fake blood poured over him and you barely notice him in that scene! btw, that was a real basement (very damp) and it was freezing when they shot that scene. i was LHMO when he told me! does that make me evil?

reply

I believe you are referring to the film 'People under the Stairs'.

I don't care what you say - I'm right, you're wrong.

There was a diary, wasn't there, which I think belonged to the "bride" in the photos. One of the entries said something like: "the girls have found a man with no face in the barn". I thought he was a farmer who's had a disfiguring accident, had gone a bit nuts, and had basically kidnapped a family and held them prisoner. The wedding photos in which he's "wearing" a face seem as though he forced one or more of them to get "married" to him. He obviously keeps them tied up in the cellar and feeds them human flesh. Nice!

reply

sorry bogwart, you being rude actually makes you look the fool. don't snap at people when you don't know what the hell you're talking about. Shaun of the dead has nothing at all to do with this. that family was indeed chained up and you've been pwnd....by yourself no less.

And knowing is half the battle.

I think from what I saw of the film and from what I've read here, I can deduce the following backstory:

Farmer guy has good life with farmer wife and farmer kids. Farmer guy then has an accident that completely disfigures his face. Then for some reason his farm gets closed down. He starts to go a bit loopy and starts abducting people, cutting off their faces and wearing them, as you would. Then his kids find a faceless guy in the barn, tell mum, mum tries to leave with kids, farmer goes ballistic, whacks on a face and they all have a nice night in with the camera, re-creating his happy photos when he looked normal. Then he chains them all down in the basement and only feeds them the remains of his now quite sizable face/head collection. They eventually go nuts too.

Any suggestions?
