If all Wilkinson wanted was to find the treasure

And bring prestige to his name, why didn't he just ask Ben to help him? It's not like in NT1 where Ben and Ian were divided over something illegal (well 'kidnapping' the president is illegal but only Ben thought of that). Ben would jump at the chance to find more treasure.

Wilkinson knew that they'd have to do illegal stuff to find it and he needed a way to motivate Gates.

My biggest 'problem' with this whole movie!?! If Ed Harris had gone to Nic Cage asking for help, then no movie. So they made Ed Harris the 'villain' just b/c they needed a 'villain.' Interesting movie, but very weak premise.
