the plot of this movie made me want to smash my head on my desk

Holy crapping hell; this guy is so desperate to prove the innocence of his great great great grandfather; not his father or brother or something; but his GREAT GREAT GREAT GRANDFATHER, whom he doesn't, of course, actually even know, that he is willing to break into Buckingham Palace, break into the White House, and kidnap the President of the United States among other things, all of which will mar his family's reputation CONSIDERABLY more if he is caught doing. How about the idiot just, I don't know, swallow his pride?

You didn't watch the 1st movie, did you? Committing treason is the franchise legacy. I honestly can't wait to see what Cage will do next time. And breaking into the White House shouldn't be counted in.

It's only his great great grandfather, btw. And he didn't want his family name to be Mudd after the fact. I would do the same.

I think "Captain Planet" is something that should be mandatory to watch nowadays.

Team Jacob!

I'm sorry a Disney family movie caused you to feel that much emotion

Seeing as his dad (+1) caught him in the attic, and said "my grandfather's (+2) grandfather (+2)", he's actually 5 generations before him, which is great-great-great-grandfather. You're missing a great, I think.

"His name is mud" He explains why. Dr Samuell Mud was supposedly a conspirator in the assasination. He was pardoned later, but it didnt matter becasue his name still lived in infamy, and he wouldnt let the Gates' name be mud.

Speaking of bad plots, I am the only one who noticed seriouly plot holes. Just because Gates proves there is a city of gold, does not prove that his great ancestor was trying to protect it. The proof that his ancestor was a co-conspirator in the Lincoln assassination was in the Booth diary page. In order to prove his ancestor's innocense he then needs to show that the diary page is fake or means something else. Towards the end of the movie Ed Harris' character says that he's sorry for dragging his family's name through the mud, but that doens't prove anything. Is he sorry for creating a forgery or for using an authentic diary page that would ruin the Gates' family name just to get Ben Gates involvement. The movie never does explain how the diary page came to be or what it meant. Maybe Gates' ancestor tried to burn the diary page not to protect the city of gold but because it names him as a co-conspirator of the Lincoln assassination. So all-in-all, finding the city of gold proves indeed that there is a city of gold, but not the intentions of Gates' ancestor. I know its a cheesy adventure movie, but that was a weak plot.

It's a National Treasure movie, weak plots come with the territory. They probably wouldn't even bother with one, but they need at least some excuse for why Gates & co. are running around to all these historical landmarks.

I disliked this movie as much as I liked the first one.

As I get it, bassicly Ben is breaking all thoose laws to prove that a relative of his (I'm not gonna try and write the right number of great great great.... grandfather)did not suport the south in the civil war.
Why was that so important to him. Maybe his ancestor had a good reason for wanting the south to win.
