Sean Bean film The Dark

The Orphanage is enjoyable enough, proven by its near universal critical acclaim. I've also watched the film The Dark which has numerous similarities in concept, plot, cinematography etc ... yet was universally panned. I'm just wondering if anyone could explain the difference in how two near identical films can be received so differently? Anyone?

2 reasons

The Orphanage LOOKS good - rich with lots of details in shots

Sucking up to established directors/producers

this is easily seen with Spielberg and Tarantino movies - its a bit like The Emperors New Clothes - few people are prepared to call BS on the recent stuff and their current rep relies on former glories
