dont expect a horror film...

...so you can enjoy this one

I am fed up with his films being labelled as horror - they have horrific or horror elements (and this film far more than Pans Labyrinth or The Devils Backbone) BUT they simply dont possess the momentum, scariness or gore/violence to be called horror...

enjoy this film as a nice drama about a woman who *possibly* breaks down and commits suicide by overdose after her adopted son dies

the ambiguity still does not make it a horror flick

Dude, horror is a pretty encompassing genre, and I'd argue that it actually includes the elements you claim it lacks. This is definitely a horror film though it crosses over with drama as well, yes. Why would you get fed up with a detail like that?

reply

Just because this movie defies your expectations of what the horror genre is capable of doesn't mean that it's not a horror movie.

reply

There are different levels of horror in films just like there are different levels of comedy, etc.

This film IS listed in the book "101 Horror Films You Must See Before You Die"...
And I WOULD classify this film as "horror."
However, in the same breath I can see what the OP is talking about to a degree...
This was the last movie listed in the book... I've seen them all. And there are a few films in the book that I wouldn't consider horror.
But if I've learned anything... Horror is like music. Some may like Elvis... Some like Rob Zombie... Yet they are both considered "rock" acts.

Trust me,

I'd consider it a horror. There are definitely some intense moments. I'd consider it a horror more than The Devil's Backbone and I wouldn't ever consider Pan's Labyrinth a horror film.

am I paint?

reply

I wouldn't ever consider Pan's Labyrinth a horror film

Yeah, I wouldn't either.

reply

I would call this a horror film -- but not a slasher film.

But, I agree, "horror" may not be the right term for it.

reply

Who said it was a slasher movie?

reply

Totally agree.

reply

It's not like horror is the only genre for this.

It may be an element, which it is.

I'd say that this was a mystery, supernatural slash psychological thriller.

reply

Romantic comedy all the way.
