So what really happened in the basement?

Spoilers!

Okay, so Laura - not knowing Simon is in the basement - blocks the hidden door with the pipes. He then dies after allegedly breaking his neck after falling from the stairs (which is obvious by the ruined staircase)

What made him fall?!
Was he just exhausted and slipped? The door couldn't be opened so it couldn't have pushed him backwards or anything like that. It just kind of annoys me, but otherwise I loved this film.

reply

The door could be opened from the inside; the only reason Simon couldn't get through it was because the heavy scaffold poles were wedged up against it and there was too much weight for him to shift from the other side. When he got desperate he started ramming the door in an attempt to dislodge them and they must have rebounded back against the door knocking him down the stairs. In addition, he would most probably have been exhausted as the house was empty for quite sometime while Laura and Carlos were at the hospital, so he would have been calling out all night whilst hungry and dehydrated- it wouldn't have taken much to knock the poor lad off his feet.

... it's more likely that it was a freaking old bannister that crumbled under his puny weight

Not only that, but I thought the kid was kind of literally stupid. lol

It's like death eatin' a cracker.

reply

He surely was annoying.

reply

He also died wearing that mask, so he was likely wearing it the whole time he was down there. It would limit his visibility, his voice, and could have made it harder for him to breathe through.

reply

Nothing MADE him fall. He happened to fall while banging on the door. People have accidents all the time. A child panicking because they're trapped in a dark room isn't unbelievable at all.

Indeed... 90% of all head injuries happen within the home... for no particular reason, it's just life, survival of the fittest ;)

***So I've seen 4 movies/wk in theatre for a 1/4 century, call me crazy?**

reply

All this time I thought he had starved to death!

reply

I did, too--or that he died as a result of not getting his meds, which was even more traumatic for me to picture. I guess this is why I check the boards after I watch movies! Haha.

reply

i think he died of all 3... fell off the stairs, broke his neck so he couldn't move, slowly starved, as his strength failed he couldn't breathe (his own weight crushed his lungs), AND his HIV exacerbated everything. plus he was stuck in that godawful mask. he probably died in a few days (with the smell of the mask in his nostrils). the (seemingly) dry basement probably mummified him a little. the mask served the dual purpose of keeping vermin away from his face.

i guess i don't really pity the pesky kid.

reply

^^^lol omg that post was ridiculously grim, you may as well have started it with

"I like to think he died of all 3"

reply

LOL my kinda person, grim.

reply
