Ending and Simon

I enjoyed this film but just honestly thought the ending was a little odd...
Why have her kill herself and present it as a happy ending?
And also why did Simon have HIV? Seemed a little strange and not really neccessary to the story.

It's mentioned that those close to death are more prone to perceiving supernatural apparitions, the implication being that Simon could see the ghosts of the children because he was suffering from a potentially fatal disease himself.

That's exactly what happened in the movie. She killed herself and as a result there was a happy ending. Had she lived she'd be forever miserable for killing Simon.

It was said that if he stopped taking the medication that he would die in a few weeks and that people close to death are more likely to see ghosts. They could have given him any illness for the movie but picked HIV, implying AIDS.

I agree that they could have removed the HIV, and medication, from the story and it would not have changed the plot.

It was NOT a happy ending. Bittersweet, yes, but definitely not happy. I can't think of a reason why anyone would think it was a happy ending when the scene with the children in the bedroom took place after the woman killed herself with her dead child in her arms.

I think this is a happy ending because so many are finally happy who had to go through much misery.
