What was Laura dying of ?
I'm not sure if I just missed the part where they explain it, or if they don't explain it at all.
"It's a doll, jensen"
"Doesn't mean it can't be loved"

I think it is safe to conclude that she died of a drug overdose.
If you watch her before she wishes that she had Simon back, you can see her taking several pills from a prescription bottle (Definitely NOT Simon's HIV meds). We can see her slip the bottle in her pocket after she changes into the orphanage uniform in the bathroom (Which explains why she has them later in the bedroom.).
In all likelihood, it was some kind of anti-depressant, mood stabilizer or tranquilizer [remember how she couldn't sleep through the night?] that was supposed to help her cope with the loss of her son.
That's my opinion anyway. :)
I thought the OP meant the part where Aurora is talking to Laura after the "experiment" through the house. Where they both have their sleeves up and there is a mark on Laura's arm and many similiar marks on Aurora's arm and Aurora says: "We who are closer to death, we are more receptive of these messages." That's just what I think the OP was talking about because they asked what was she DYING of, not how she finally died.
sharethats what i want to know. she was dying of something but is never elaborated on. did the husband know? its been a few years since i've see it
shareIt looked like Lupus to me.
shareIt's never Lupus
shareBest. Comment. Ever.
shareWhy would you say it is Lupus? One cannot look at a person and automatically know they have Lupus. I had an aunt who had the disease for 25 years it was not until I was a teenager that she told me about her condition. Laura took an overdose of sleeping pills on purpose because she could not live without Tomas.
shareActually, it might actually have been Lupus since it often makes women infertile and we do know that Laura adopted a boy so it's at least likely she could not have children herself.
I very much doubt it was lupus but it's am interesting idea.
I thought that the medium was referring to Laura too (which is why she encouraged her to believe in the ghosts).
It's a long stretch, but it's possible that Laura was HIV Positive too. It would explain why they had to adopt, and why they would voluntarily choose a HIV Positive child. The marks on her arms might have been the first signs of an AIDS rash.
That's just a theory though.
As I recall, suddenly Laura cried out when talking to the medium. It's because the medium had reached out and pinched her arm (hard enough to hurt). The underside of a woman's arm is sensitive so it left one mark that probably faded in a short time. The marks on the arm of the medium were from something she suffered from that indicated she was close enough to death that she could see the dead.

Laura committed suicide by taking some prescription pills. If you recall, in the scene where she's sitting on the windowsill, as she's holding Simon, she's seen ingesting some pills.

I think when she compared arms with the psychic she was showing scars from an old suicide attempt ie cutting her wrists; I agree with everyone that she eventually died from a drug overdose. I think showing her scars established that she was a troubled soul with previous suicide attempts...
shareI don't recall seeing any scars... The psychic has just pricked her arm. That is why her sleeve was rolled up. She gave Laura a little cut then she revealed her disease ridden arm.
This is how I interpreted it as well. The failed suicide attempt somehow brought her "closer" to the dead kids/ghosts.
shareWhy was she able to see tomas at the party?
shareI haven't watched the film in a long time, but I'm pretty sure that what she saw was her son dressed up as one of the orphans. No ghosts there.
shareIt was, in my opinion, because she played the game. Like at the end of the film, the husband can "see" her because he "found" (giving rise to another game) Laura's necklace he gave her before he left.
It's always after I lose things that I realize how very significant the things I've lost are.
Also, I believe that when the psychic said "We who are close to death..." Etc she was talking about Simon and Herself. Of course because of what she was able to do/her psychic abilities. And her psysical state.
shareAs stated, Laura popped to many pills and killed herself.
Fairly easy way to go, I would assume.
