I know this is just a movie but we do have some naive mission workers & aid workers (not religious). Just like Obama, who thought the terrorists & our enemies were just gonna be overwhelmed by his approach, many workers think that they can just transform these killers. Look at the poor American girl killed by ISIS. People like this, and in the movie, respect one thing: strength.
shareI'm not sure it's naivety as such. I think the guys character in this movie is unrealistically clueless for dramatic purposes but in reality I'm sure these people are well aware of the dangers. The reason they do it is that they reason that if they don't do it who will? Actually a very good movie based on the best of both worlds is Machine Gun Preacher based on a true story.
I've had a lot of sobering thoughts in my time Del Boy, it's them that started me drinking!
You know who else respects strength, the Taliban who he may or may not have helped in the 3rd one. Also, President Obama has done quite a good job of bombing the heck out of countries during his term. He might have deescalated the ground wars on terror, but despite Congress not authorizing all, we have amped up our bombing & drone missions.

Unfortunately, he's also done a great job of supplying areas controlled by the the muslim brotherhood with money and weapons...regardless of what anyone thinks the intentions were there, arming and funding people that want us all dead isn't a great strategy.
