Question about the stunt that went wrong....

I adore this film. But something is niggling at me.

I get that he got injured doing the stunt that is shown in the opening.

As far as wer are told, he jumps from a bridge with the aim of landing on a horse below but it goes wrong.

My question is, how did the horse die and end up under water? He didnt jump from a bridge into water onto a horse so how does that happen? And why would he be jumping from the track into water? I'm just confused how it all fits together and need some clearing up.

The original stunt was that Roy would jump off the bridge into the water below on the horse, but it's shown in the ending that they cut Roy's scene completely out of the movie and just used a different stuntman, and a different stunt where he jumps off the bridge on a horse below.

I also took it from the dialogue with his stunt friend who visits at the start of the film and mentions trying to get her attention, as well as the agent later on. He says something about getting off the suicide "thing"

My interpretation is that the stunt gone wrong was actually a suicide attempt in itself. The morphine attempt later on is not the first time Roy tried to end it. Which makes Alexandria's attempt to save him even more powerful.
