What did Alexandria's mother say to the doctor?

In the hospital scene, the doctor wanted Alexandria to translate for him, but she spoke only a couple of words. Then the mother became more gentle and offered the doctor some cakes, then she said something. What did she say? And what did Alexandria tell her mom?

It seemed to me that Alexandria omitted or outright lied about how she shouldn't work in the orchard anymore. If I remember correctly her little brother or sister was there and you see them exchange a look - like she knew Alexandria wasn't translating correctly, but didn't say anything. I think she knew the family needed her help and didn't want to upset her mother so she just didn't tell her.

Thanks for the explanation. I think that's quite reasonable, considering the family had already lost the man. How foolish of me to have forgetten that!!

Well, I just watched the movie so this is what I remember: the doctor was telling Alexandria's mom how she shouldn't let the kid work like that because she's going to fall and break something again or whatever, but Alexandria translates this wrong; she tells her mom the doctor actually said that her mom's cookies/cakes smell good or something. So of course her mom, not knowing what the doctor actually said, is very flattered to hear that and she offers some to him. She also tells Alexandria to tell the doctor "thank you", but Alexandria translates wrong again.

Edit: Okay, I found the scene for you and I translated:

Mom: (Sir) Doctor!
Mom (to Alexandria): Come on, ask him.
Alexandria: She wants to ask you how much days I have to stay here.
Doc: Well, I want you to stay here until you get better.
Doc: Her (cast??gyps??, I don't understand, sorry) will come off in a few days, but I'd like you/her to stay here until she's completely recovered.
Alexandria (to her mom): I have to stay a few more days.
Mom: You've been staying here for too long anyway, and we have to move soon to work in another city.
Alexandria (to the doctor): She wants to say we're staying here for too much days and we have to move to city.
Doc: No, you just tell her you shouldn't be working in the groves. At your age it's dangerous and you spend the rest of your days picking fruit and then she'll fall, she surely will fall.
Mom: What did he say?
Alexandria: He's saying that ... your cookies smell very good.
Mom: Oh..ehm.. thank you! Tell him "thank you". And.. next time, I'll bring some more. Do you like them (the cookies) ? *mom offers the doctor a cookie*
Doc: Thank you. What did she say?
Alexandria: She says "okay".
Doc: Really?
Alexandria: Really.
Doc: Alexandria, she asked me something, didn't she?
Alexandria: No, that's how we speak.
Doc: You sure?
Alexandria: Sure.
Mom: Come on, ask him again. How many more days do you have to stay here?
*end of scene*

Thank you! I really did want to know what they said, and there were no subtitles on the version I saw.

There were no subtitles on the version I saw either, but that's because I'm Romanian and therefore wouldn't need any..

Good to know there simply aren't any subtitles for this one. In most U.S.-made films, when the characters speak in a language other than English, there are. So I assumed I saw an off copy of it. I assumed either you are Romanian, or spoke it. I'm certain I'm not the only one who does or will appreciate your translation :)

Thanks and I'm glad I could help. :)

Yes, both the mother and the girl are Romanian actresses.
The language they speak in is Romanian, of course. I think that they wouldn't have chosen Romanian actresses if they had wanted some other language.

Romanian is a Latin language, it's one of the Romance Languages, along with French, Portuguese, Italian and Spanish. So I guess you could say she sounds a bit Spanish since these languages are similar, but in no way, shape or form Indian, because it has nothing to do with Romanian. :)
