So what really happened?

I don't get it... Does the ending imply that Roy gets better and does more stunts? I think the girl in the car was his girlfriend that left him for the "star", but I really didn't get much from this.

We see Roy in "the story" get up and fight back and punch the guy and tell the girl to piss off, so is the implication that he gets back up on the horse lol? I don't understand the high rating. Maybe I'm just not that good at reading subtle plot or subtext which is what this entire film seems to be so it all went over my head. The props and visuals were fantastic and all but I don't see the greatness?

Tarsem (the director) indicates in the audio commentary that he intentionally left the ending ambiguous so that the audience could make up their own mind on whether Alexandria was telling the truth about him recovering or if it wasn't true and she was just imagining seeing her friend in moving pictures.

It is a very metaphor and symbol rich film and it's a story about stories and what they can do. I can see, though, how some might feel it's just not a movie for them.

There was a tumblr review/analysis I read on it several months ago that I felt was a very well done analysis of a lot of the symbols that appear in the film.

Agent Hill: ...Then aliens invaded New York and were beaten back, by among others, a giant green monster, a costumed hero from the 40's.... and a god.

Agent Ward: I don't think Thor is technically a god.

Hill: Well...you haven't been near his arms.
