One thing that bothers me---
--the nephew. What was THAT about?
shareThe planned follow-up about him was deleted in editing. It's the only loose thread in an otherwise elegantly complete and well-resolved story.
shareThe irony is that it made the film more realistic in that it's the sort of loose end you'd expect from an improvised story with a changing plot.
shareThank you--any idea where his story would have led?
I agree with your second sentence whole-heartedly. This movie is amazing, and everything about it is just perfect. . .except for that one part that always just makes me go, "Wait, what?"
I just saw this movie. Who is the nephew you are referring to?
shareHe exits the giant carriage just before the princess. The bandits "kidnap" the princess but leave the nephew behind. He's in a deleted scene as well. His character is never reflected in the real world storyline, as far as I can tell.
shareThe real world counterpart of the nephew appears to be the dead boy she sees when hiding from the nurse. I don't know that it's the same actor in both scenes but in the commentary the director says he died of snake bites. In the deleted scene the priest saves the boy from a snake.
shareThat's what I thought too, the reference to snakes connected the two characters but only tenuously it has to be said. And of course anyone who hadn't watched the extras wouldn't have been able to make the connection so it was indeed a bit of a loose end.
This means something, this is important.
