was he imagining his time stopping or did he realy gain that ability

when ben is recalling the events of his mates 12 birthday the house and the furnitue, even his friends mum "mrs higgins" clothes all look like they are from the 60's 70's but ben must be between 20 - 22 so if that scene is set when he is 12 that would be between 8 - 10 years ago so about 1996 - 1998 is the is a mistake or is it supposed to be like tht to illustrate something i have obviously missed.

even the computer game is ancient and ben mentions a new state of the art computer, why not a playstation

so why can't this movie be set in 1990's?
Is there anything to imply that it is not in the 90's?

I'm also interested in when the movie was set. I was under the impression it was set at the time it was made, but I also noticed what the OP said about looking as if it ws set during the 70's when Ben was 12 years old.

Any answers?

There is absolutely no evidence that it took place in this decade. I like to think that the filmmakers intentionally made the year of the film's "present" ambiguous to further the relativity and subjection of time.

I use quotes from movies others deem cool to gain acceptance!!!

When he talks about his crushes, he mentions that one of them was Zola Budd, and they show him as a child watching her during the '84 Los Angeles Olympics. He's probably about 10 years old in that scene, which would have made his character 33 years old in 2006. Since he didn't appear to be anywhere near that old in the movie, I think it must have been set in the 90's. Probably around 1995. Also, none of the characters have cell phones, which would have been a little weird had the movie taken place in the year it was made.

Wasn't the boss on the cell phone during the game? They also talked about texting in the beginning of the movie.
