I didn't read the article, but if John died. It would be a different journey, but same mission.
Mary knows she made a deal with YE to I think save John, so if he died again, I would think Mary would be just enraged for revenge as John was when she was killed in the Pilot. I'm not sure if Mary would do the same as John, because she knew about the "supernatural" world and I assume she would know what was responsible for John's death.
Would Mary teach her boys how to be hunters? Or would she prefer to hide that world from them..? I'm not sure. But if she did teach them, would she be tough on them like John, or would she be more calm and motherly with it? If she hid the hunting from Sam and Dean then, they wouldn't be "that" prepared, they'd learn about things along with the audience, depending on when "the show" would start..it's crazy I'm thinking way too much into this. What If and other theories can lead to a book series!
Now, I don't remember if Mary knew Bobby or Bobby was someone John met when the boys were younger, but if Mary did know Bobby/I think Mary would go to him (or other hunters) she knew for help. Also, Mary knows the deal she made and it would still be about protecting Sam... I think Mary would eventually be killed and the boys would go to search for the truth and end up on a similar to the same road they get to in Season 4-5, because what YE did to Sam is still in effect and I don't think the demons would do anything that different. But, how the boys grew up would be different..
