EXCLUSIVE: It’s the ladies’ turn in the Supernatural franchise. I have learned that the CW’s long-running drama series, about the adventures of the Winchester brothers, is prepping a new spinoff, Wayward Sisters, starring the original series’ standout Kim Rhodes.
The project — which is being developed as a planned spinoff and will have a backdoor pilot airing as an episode of Supernatural‘s upcoming 13th season — tells the story of Sheriff Jody Mills (Rhodes) and a group of troubled young women, all of them orphaned by supernatural tragedy. Under Mills’ training and protection, these women will emerge as a supreme monster-fighting force. Unlike the original series, which centers on biological brothers, Wayward Sisters is about a sisterhood of girls in a foster family. The spinoff hails from a quartet of Supernatural writers-producers, showrunners Andrew Dabb and Robert Singer as well as Phil Sgriccia, Robert Berens. Warner Bros. TV, which produces Supernatural, is the studio. The CW and WBTV declined to comment.
Bella what do you think of this?
shareI really like the sounds of it and if done well shows promise. Not so sure about Claire or Donna being involved but that's just a little gripe. But I can see Jody helping orphaned women against the Supernatural because she's seen what the boys have been through and is prepared. I so wanted Jody to lead a spin-off ages ago and am happy people have taken this on board. She is the perfect candidate to lead a band of Wayward Women. I love her.
How do you feel JP?
By the sounds of it, you're not so sure??
I to like the sounds of this . Sorry if I sounded sketchy. I'm just not down with a spin off. But if Jody is lead character I will
watch.👍
I'm thinking less Claire. And more Jody and Alex. Like you have already started.

Most definitely .
shareLooks like this is why the J's are talking about 300 eps as the end of SPN. Looks like everyone has already moved on.

I actually do believe #300 is a target end-date for everyone concerned, which is why they're pushing the backdoor pilot. Sounds like bad fan fiction to me, and I think they're massively overestimating the level of interest in this concept. But go forth and do - I don't care one way or the other whether it flies or not.
As for the Js guest-starring, maybe Jared will, but Dabb doesn't use Jensen now on his own damn show. I highly doubt Dabb has any intention of bringing Dean in for guest-starring appearances. And if he did, it would be to diss Dean, so I hope Jensen has nothing whatsoever to do with this.
Of course, right now this is just a backdoor pilot, like Bloodlines was. Doesn't mean the CW has to or will go forward to series.
And like Bloodlines all the same people are behind this project except for Berens. Either way, if SPN continues or 300 is it. Berens is likely gone.
It does sound like Berens would be the co-showrunner, at the very least, and probably the one doing most of the day-to-day IF - and that's a big IF - the show gets a series pick-up and they still have a half-season 14 to finish off the original series at 300. Which sadly means Dabb sticks around, displaying even less interest than he already has in the original series, chomping at the bit to be more involved in the spin-off.
Wow you are really quick to spot the announcement. I just saw the same article in the online TV Guide. I'm really glad if Kim is doing it. I've always liked the episodes she's on and Donna as well. If it happens wonder if they will do crossovers.
shareFor me personally, even though I really like the character of Jody Mills, I have no interest whatsoever in a spinoff of Supernatural. I am very fussy about what i watch and can see no reason why this would appeal to me as to be honest I now watch Supernatural mostly for Jensen Ackles especially and Jared Padalecki. The writers and show runners have just about killed off any interest in the stories!
shareBut with the spin-off Icarus it gives us the chance to see Sam and Dean again. Maybe not every single episode sporadically say 4/5 times in a season if the show IS finishing that will give me more J2 time and still see my boys on screen together. It's better than nothing at all?? End the show and never see S&D again? That would be crap.
That's a big problem for me with a "spinoff" - they can be poisonous to a series and not last very long and then it will be connected to Supernatural forever. When/if Supernatural ends, couldn't a spinoff "ruin" that ending? Doesn't Dean and Sam deserve a good send off and not be chained to a spinoff forever? Spinoffs can be good for a franchise, but Supernatural doesn't need one. I like the idea of Jody Mills, but if it means seeing more Claire, then no thanks. Isn't Supernatural (writers) known for "ruining" female characters? And now they want a full new series about them...is that a good idea? I'll still wait to see this backdoor pilot before I commit thou.
If they focus it on Jodie's home rather than just the girls that Jodie raises then you are more likely to see Sam and Dean again.
Though the question is will any spin off actually fork out the cost for both Jared and Jensen at the same time to put in an appearance? Most spin off shows when there are cross overs only have one main actor doing the trip not two unless there is something big happening and if they show just Sam or Dean just popping by without the other the fans are going to question what is happened to the other.
Not to be mean, Bella, but I don't think there's any way that Sam and Dean will be in the spin-off once Supernatural is over. Their story has always been a tragedy. I fully expect it to end a tragedy, their only legacy being whatever is in the spin-off if there is a one, because either one or both will die. I could see how the idea for an open ending, like one of them saying, 'we've got work to do,' before they head off down the road would work for them being on the spin-off, but I think J2 have wanted their characters to go die with the show for a long time now, their fees for a guest appearance would probably be way too high for the spin-off, and they've recently said they don't want to do a movie after the show is over, so I don't think an open ending is going to happen.
I could be wrong, but if SS had been the end of the show, I think they both would have ended up in the cage. That didn't happen, and I think that now they've got to build up to an ending like that again for there to be any kind of satisfying payoff, but I genuinely believe that with TPTB's attention being on the spin-off instead of on Supernatural, that won't happen. Whatever we get in season 13 will be just as sloppy as what we got in season 12, if not more so. If season 14 can only be negotiated to the 300th episode, then I suspect the spin-off will be picked up for the remaining episodes of what would have been season 14 in a shortened season, and I'm guessing that means that the final season of Supernatural will be compromised too. I hope I'm wrong, but that's the way I see it.
I think you are right. S12 felt like TPTB had their focus everywhere but the story of Sam and Dean. S13 is just going to be more of the same if not even more so. The only glimmer of hope might be that Singer retires, Dabb moves on to be showrunner of WS and Carver comes back for S14. Then it has a small chance of having a decent send off.
We should know more at SDCC...
Clue, I just battle on hope, that the end isn't gonna mean the end. In the past, my favorite TV shows have ended and I've felt empty, hollow and wondering WTF what do I do now? No more whatever to look forward to. I might be dreaming, but if gives me some hope to think that when it ends, that's it I'll never see S&D ever again. I don't want to feel that empty hollow feeling again, but I know that day will come even when/if we get that Movie, they might do more than one sequel which I hope will be the case. Please, pretty please!! It took me a number of years to get over the loss of my favorite shows/characters who I grew so very fond of. At least with the promise of a Movie, the hollow feeling won't be so damned painful. Even though one day it will be predictable.
The end of this show isn't going to be like any other will it? This is going to be a very tough pill to swallow. I don't care how much notice they give us it will be a very hard day.
shareCassiopeia, your absolutely right. I know for me it will be heartbreaking when I hear series finale attached to a promo . I watched Smallville like a watch this show, but when it ended I knew Clark was alright so that ending was just the beginning of Superman. Buffy and Angel hit me pretty hard but I don't think that feeling will compare to the end of SPN. But let's not think of the end of the road yet and enjoy what's left of the trip remaining.🍻
