" 'Supernatural' Is Wasting Mark Pellegrino as Lucifer"

I saw this article 2 days ago but when Bella said in the Lucifer thread that Mark's talents were being wasted, I had to bring it here.

----
Fans asked for it and Supernatural delivered ... kind of. After bouncing the role among various guest stars and series regulars, Mark Pellegrino has returned to Supernatural as Lucifer. The original Lucifer, and in many fans' estimation the best, is back and it should be a cause for celebration. Yet Supernatural has wasted the return of the former Lord of Hell in the second half of season 12. Supernatural has a Lucifer problem and it needs fixing.

1. A Perfect Waste of a Perfect Vessel

Pellegrino returning to the role of Lucifer should be more than just fan service. It is the perfect time to bring Lucifer back to his most giddy vessel because Lucifer is in roughly the same mood as he was in seasons 4 and 5. Lucifer is properly back to his scheming ways in season 12. After impregnating Kelly Kline, Lucifer has a goal and a plan. Lucifer is optimistic and for the audience that makes him terrifying. No one is better at playing at this opportunistic shade of Lucifer than Pellegrino. Each Lucifer actor brought something to the role but Pellegrino nails Lucifer as a schemer.

The disappointment is that in four episodes Supernatural hasn't used Lucifer or played to his strengths. "Somewhere Between Heaven and Hell" gave us a brief glimpse that there was a reason to bring Pellegrino back as Lucifer as he broke out of his chains from Crowley and was ready to escape. The episode ended with Lucifer losing harder than ever before. Lucifer never really had a chance of escaping. While it is great that Crowley wasn't so foolish to think he'd be able to imprison Lucifer up without back-up, the very smart move by Crowley illuminates a very confusing one by the writers. If Lucifer is just going to be Crowley's slave, there is no reason to bring Pellegrino back.

- The Spawn (and Salvation?) of Satan

While the sidelining of Lucifer is irritating for the moment, it's very unlikely that things will stay this way. It should be clear, at this point, that Kelly will give birth to Lucifer's child. If the baby had been close to being aborted in the episode where it was created or in the handful of installments after maybe Supernatural wouldn't be in this situation. The longer the show drags out Kelly on the run, the more obvious it is that the baby will make it to full term. This isn't just basic Supernatural logic; it is basic storytelling logic.

Lucifer's child, who will undoubtedly grow up super quick to be either a super-hot lady or super-hot guy, is going to free their baby daddy from Crowley's new prison. It's not likely this will happen in season 12. The likely scenario is that the season 12 finale will be a remix of the season 4 finale where Sam and Dean do everything to stop the baby being born but it doesn't work. Lucifer still wins the day and the next season or two is all about how to put the metaphorical evil genie back in its bottle.

Do you agree that Pellegrino is being wasted as Lucifer? Do you enjoy having him back regardless? How long do you think it will take Lucifer to break free of Crowley's control? Will he ever? Is Lucifer's baby definitely going to be born?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think I remember Mark P. campaigning a little to get his part as Lucifer back either last year or at the start of this one. I don't think he's being wasted on the character if it's what he wants to do. I think for me the problem is that Lucifer is here at all. I don't know why they insisted on bringing him back last year other than to maybe give Misha something to do. But still, they brought him back, and then they had the perfect chance to get rid of him again when Amara pulled him out of Cas, but they didn't do it. Now we're stuck with this ridiculous baby storyline.

I'm going to be annoyed if the child grows at an expedient rate. Amara all over again. I'm also going to be annoyed if they age the baby up to being a child or teenager child, and we're stuck with a recurring kid on the show or if said child goes and rescues his father from Crowley as the article suggests.

Also, I know it was just one episode, but we've already seen nephilim, and she wasn't bad by nature. She didn't have all these superpowers and wasn't the greatest evil ever known. I think she had supernatural strength and could see angels in their natural form rather than as the vessels they were inhabiting. That's it. They're probably going to wreck, I mean 'add' things to that lore the way they have everything else though. Honestly, I'd rather someone just take off with the baby and have it disappear into Jesse, the anti-Christ land, but then we'd have to hear 'what about Lucifer's spawn?' all the time the way we do Jesse.

Yes, Mark tweeted that Nick could come back and hunt with the boys (https://twitter.com/MarkRPellegrino/status/757378742134067201). I get the feeling he likes working on the SPN set and enjoys playing Lucifer.

Unlike the author of the article, I don't think Mark is wasted as Lucifer. My issue with Lucifer is that I didn't want him back in season 11!!! When he came back, I was ready to deal because I love Mark P. but then Lucifer changed vessels and I just could NOT deal with Casifer. I still don't know why Lucifer is still on the show. They could have ended that storyline when Amara pulled him out of Castiel as you pointed out, they didn't. They could have ended it after THE EGG, they didn't. At this point, it's clear Lucifer's not going away so I don't care whether he's tied to a chair all season or burning the earth to the ground, at least he's being played by the right actor, in my opinion. That's a compromise I can live with.

I don't see how else they can get this nephilim storyline going if the child doesn't grow fast. No one is going to kill a toddler lol. I'd rather the nephilim be portrayed by a 25-year old actor acting like he's 18 then be stuck with an actual kid.

I'm the type of fan who picks apart canon fails and questionable continuity but I would have no issue with this nephilim having different powers, a different growth rate, or a propensity for evil. Chuck already said that archangels are made of a different material. I expect that a nephilim of the half archangel variety would be different from a mere half angel, and then, even angels have varying degrees of powers (seraphims versus cupids for example). I would even expect a nephilim from Lucifer to be different from a child of Gabriel's. Lucifer is one of a kind. His essence has been modified by the Mark. His offsprings are demonic in nature if you will (the nephilim might buck the trend because there's an exception to every rule). If Michael created a race, I doubt they would be demons.

I don't want anyone to take the baby and run. I need the nephilim to die or we WILL have to hear about him just like we still do about that darn Jesse lol. Just kill this Lucifer story once and for all by actually killing his seed so we can all move on next season without the lingering threat of Satan Jr. gallivanting somewhere on earth.
