Why is it we mourn the death of a bad guy?

In my previous post, I showed my destain at the death of the Alpha Vamp. I felt this way over Cain's death; over Zachariah's death, Death's death and as far back as YED's Death. Such characters leave an imprint on me, and I guess many others. So I guess that the writers have done their job in shocking us to the core. Indeed they have!

Normally they are only in the plot for a short time, which I think makes their demise much more significant, having such an impact. That actor only has such a short window in which to show us his talent. So I here myself thinking again they've done their job. They've left such a lasting impression on me.

So why is it we mourn the bad guys when they are really the bad guys in the story?

Because people like Claire and Alex need serious scourging.

We mourn the bad guys who are interesting and played by good actors.
I never mourned Ruby but I'm sad about the Alpha Vamp and will riot if something happens to Crowley.
