And stay for the long haul. Those of you who started from 2005 'The Pilot'. Are your feelings still as strong for the show now as it was back then? What do you think has changed, or remained the same? What was the main reason that made YOU stay with it for all this time?

I caught the very end scene of Heart on TNT. Sam was about to kill Madison and that was tearing Dean up. It was hook line and sinker from that moment on. That was just as S6 was starting. I haven't missed a live telecast since. I bought every DVD from the Pilot and binge watched in a week.
I still love the show. I know that some seasons don't work as well as others. This season isn't working as well for me because of the lack of focus on the brothers. And according to Jared in Las Vegas they would like to negotiate shorter seasons. Jared apparrently is struggling at the moment.
Oh I really, really hope we don't end up reducing the seasons. I am surprised to here to that Jared is struggling, hope his depression isn't resurfacing again? Also pleased to hear they've agreed up to S14 which is another 2 and a half years away, who knows beyond this point if they want to carry on. We are so lucky they've stayed so long. I thought the show would finish around S13 so this is brilliant news. I think the lack of focus on the boys is noticeable particularly at the end of the episode where they always have a heart to heart about the case and how it's affected them, and how they move forward. So how could the writers amend this thought?

During a re-watch I was surprised that some of the later seasons were much better than I had remembered them, especially S6 has some good episodes. Knowing what was going on I actually enjoyed soulless Sam, it's quite hilarious at times.
If I remember correctly my sister had heard about the show and suggested watching it. We were into horror and mystery stuff, and rock music as well, so yeah. They just started airing it here in Germany, and we gave it a try. But the sync was terrible, so we bought the UK version of the first two seasons and binged them. We didn't love it immediately (the boys too pretty to take seriously, all those damsels in distress, the MOTW not scary enough and not too original either etc) but the more we learned about the brothers' backround and the more we watched them interact, the more they grew on us. I had never seen such a dynamic - fucked up, but pulling at the heartstrings at the same time, I really fell in love with it. My favorite SPN is the second part of S1 and the first part of S2.
I stopped caring a bit when the show became about heaven and hell and constant apocalypses. It lost the human touch, imo the big strength. I didn't like the reveal that Mary was a hunter, and that everything had been orchestrated all along. I love the season 5 finale though, and there have been many great moments in later seasons, but too often I have the feeling that the people behind it lack vision, don't really put their heart into it and pander to the audience too much. But SPN will always be something special to me because of the Winchester brothers.
I will never give up on the Winchesters as long as they are on my screen. It is frustrating though when Jared and Jensen are on board for more seasons but the writers don't know what to do with them.
shareI suspect after 12 years it gets tiresome for the team to think up new stories. Stories which evolve and last the test of time. The boys have had their fair share of troubles, and to think of something new and engaging for 22 episodes per season is a tall ask. I think the show needs to reinvent itself like it did when the angels came on board. That was exciting, thrilling and foreboding to watch. The angels bought something that demons didn't have. They were powerful, domineering and forceful. They respected each other and were not impressed with us humans. However, noticing The Winchester's it's brought them into a whole new ball game.
I feel that time has come again that something BIG needs to be woven in. The show is superb at weaving in characters and objects into the mythology and that's where the show has always been at its best. If a NEW being could come in like they attempted with God and Amara, but a new race that would overpower us, and make us talk about this new being would be so what this show needs, right now. This show loves to reinvent its self and over time it manages to surprise us, thinking where the **** did that come from.
I love the introduction of Rowena, perhaps Witches could be that spark. Perhaps a whole coven of Witches that Rowena often talks of could be that spark we're looking for again?

I have the feeling this has been the case for many years now unfortunately. There have been some ups here and there, but all in all the writers' imagination seems to be quite limited. The episode 'Baby' has shown what's possible when people try something different without going meta (I hate meta).
The writers do seem to try and play it too safe. Risk taking is the reason why this show worked so well for so many years.
shareWhen Supernatural first aired, I thought it looked like an interesting show (I was an avid fan of the X-files) but at the time it was on the WB, a cable channel unavailable to me. I started watching a few years ago on TNT. My younger brother had just died unexpectedly, and I was a little adrift. We had reconnected about a year before that by our common love of a few good (we thought) TV shows and would text each other during the broadcasts. Anyway, one day by happenstance, the pilot for Supernatural was airing on a day I had off. I thought, what the hell, I'll give it a try. And I've been watching it ever since.
For me, it's always been about the brothers. That's why my favorite seasons are 1-3. There was so much raw emotion, hidden or overt, between them then. I was hooked. (BTW, Mystery Spot and AHBL2 are two of my favorite episodes for obvious reasons.)
I've liked/loved many, many episodes since, but it's been such a FRUSTRATING ride as well. The lying and subterfuge between the boys. The mytharcs that went nowhere, and that I didn't even CARE about anyway. And don't even get me started on season 8!
What really bothers me sometimes are the inconsistencies in which the show runners/writers portray the Winchesters in their willingness to die/not die, kill/not kill, sacrifice/not sacrifice for themselves, each other, or the world. Pick a stance people!
And for fuck's sake! Let Dean fire the grenade launcher!
I'm left to wonder though. Did my brother Gerry watch Supernatural? I don't know. But I think he would have liked it as much as I do. And we would have been texting furiously.
I can't imagine how terrible it must be to lose your brother or sister. I don't know what to say, I just hope you're doing well.

I love those two! Another favorite of mine is 'Devil's Trap'. The tension, Bobby, the scene in the cabin where Dean realizes that his father is possessed, Sam deciding to trust Dean and not his 'father'.. The shock ending with the truck. Such an amazing episode.

hey guys, what's up? I'm edsugrue. I made a few comments on the IMDB board in the couple of weeks before it disappeared, but i was around the IMDB SPN board very regularly for the first 6 or 7 seasons. Bella UK and Private Bozz, you know me.
I first tuned in because it looked like an interesting re-envisioning of the old occult detective tale trope... is that what a trope is?!?!? I'm not sure. Anyway, I don't think I really understood that the classic rock and the Metallicar would be so important, at first. That stuff helped make me a fan, and the way they had fake IDs all the time, and just generally the sense of humor of the show. I also liked trying to keep track of different types of demons by the color of their eyes, in the early seasons. It always meant something, so you had to pay attention.
I liked the way the car's trunk was full of different arcane supernatural weapons... supposedly that was supposed to be a much more important part of the show, as Eric Kripke initially imagined the show. That actually helped get me back into being a Phantasm phan. I may have been getting back into Phantasm anyway, around that time, at least the first movie... but, this show got me to appreciate Phantasm 2 again, which (Phantasm 2) is really a very fun horror comedy.
I have not stayed for the long haul, tragically. I decided to live without a TV for awhile, which is a decision I'm mostly proud of, but it was not conducive to staying well-versed in this show. Anyway, I'm hoping to get back into it again... I have harbored that intention now and then, and not followed through, over the last few years... wish me luck, that this time I'll be able to stick with it.

Good luck tommix, it's well worth the watch I promise from a die hard fan here. As many, I will never give up on this road trip because I've invested so much of my life in these boys. They are so very special to me even though, yes they are fictional characters. I have stayed because of the chemistry between J2 and the storytelling I love my Mythology rather than the Monster of the weeks. They just take me to another level and keep me more engaged. Later seasons are strong except S8 which a number don't like including me. Carver had a good run, Gamble not so much. Dabb is improving but not as strong as I thought he would be. Keep watching, keep following the boys.

The writers did too many things to destroy the brotherhood. There isn't enough focus on Sam and Dean anymore.
