The fatal flaw

The production value was excellent. Solid characters and some engaging stories. The problem was the series couldn't make up it's mind that the invaders were good or bad.

It's a massive flaw because by their nature the invaders killed the person they were cloning. It's a very bad thing but some of the characters try to stay neutral. At least in "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" we had clear right and wrong. This came off as wrong may be for our own good.

I love the series but I do think that was a fatal point of confusion. You don't have a clear side to support even though the invaders are killing people. There needed to be a clear fight against the take over.

It's too bad because they had fun stuff planned for season 2 but we'll never know what it might have been.

Was it revealed why they were killed? Were they fatally wounded, etc ? Are the clones a "continuation" of the original and the aliens thought they're helping? Just wondering. I missed some episodes when it aired so I am going to order the DVD.

I never took it as the person being killed by the creature. It semed to me like their consciousness was transferred into a new body, a body designed to be more adaptable to water for reasons never revealed. It seemed like, in some way, this was a way to speed up human evolution as to avoid seeing the human race go extinct, again for reasons never revealed. I never viewed this as a natural form of evolution, due simply to the fact that the glowing creatures in the sea could not be a part of a natural change, but rather a tool to carry out a purposeful augmentation of the human species.

It was seen as an invasion by people who do not understand what is going on, but I don't think it was an invasion at all, but an attempt to advance humanity so as to avoid some sort of impending change in the Earth. The show was incredibly interesting, but it is also the reason that ABC forever lost me as a viewer. I will never tune in to a show on a major network again as I get tired of them screwing fans over and cancelling the shows without any care at all.

Whose idea was it for the word "Lisp" to have an "S" in it?

i partially agree. the fact that most people died in the process is a bad thing, objectively bad. i felt the show brushed past this point and the characters didnt treat it with the significance they should have (or realistically would have).

but that was just one aspect of the aliens. we know the creatures that cloned the people were basically just wombs that sucked out your DNA. they were likely just doing what came naturally to them (a theme repeated through out the show). we know the purpose of the process was to help adapt the alien lifeforms to Earth. while the method they did this with was invasive, adapting in itself is amoral. you could even argue humans exploit other species to adapt themselves. but of course its still bad for humans.

the hybrids however retained much of their original personalities and memories. most of them didnt choose to be hybrids. they dont seem to have any instructions from the aliens that made them other than a few new instincts. this means that even if the aliens were evil a hybrid could still be good. this creates an interesting moral gray area and all kinds of possibilities which im glad the show explored. i wish there were more episodes to explore it further. though i do think the lack of a clear good and bad might have lead to the shows decline.

lastly, we dont know the aliens intent. by aliens i mean whatever creatures sent the orange lights. maybe they dont really have any intent other than survive. maybe they view humans as lowly animals. maybe maybe they are doing what comes naturally to them. maybe they want to survive but dont know another way to do so. we wont ever find out though. i do think the show tended to lean towards the aliens are evil (favoring their own kind and actively attacking humans at times).

I on the other hand think it's good. I mean, how many shows there are about humans fighting evil aliens? A lot. How many shows do we have about good aliens? Also a few. I mean, life is not just black and white, good or evil. So I don't think these invaders were ever ment to fall completely on one of those categories. Of course we will never know as the show was canned before the conclusion. This ambiguity of the nature of those aliens makes way for consideration of our own morality, the choices we make and the nature of survival. It's whole lotta more interesting than just fighting the invasion.

Besides, whether something is good or evil depends of the point of view. Even humans would be percieved as evil by most of Earth's animals. We hunt them for food, clothing and sport. But dogs, cats and other pets might consider us good because we feed them and care for them. Our world (and probably every other world in the universe) is just not that simple. And this show reflects that.
