Rewatching season 9

It's not as bad as people remember. I've laughed a lot, and some of the stories are really good. Just the finale was a let down

Yeah, when I last saw it, it was better than I remembered it being. It was cool how they called back to previous seasons throughout it as well. I've been meaning to do a thread on how season 9 is better upon rewatch, once you know what you're getting into. For that reason it doesn't jar as much (at least for me), and you appreciate the episodes for what they are, and actually be entertained, in my opinion, and even notice things you didn't last time (like I didn't realize how many call backs there were - it was like "well this is our last season, so let's remind our viewers of the previous seasons).

Exactly! I loved it the second time around. Sure, there are still weak episodes/scenes, but there are so many strong ones, and the jokes are great. And, with the alternate ending (which is the only one I'm ever going to watch again, as I decided after the first time I saw the episode), the finale is quite OK for me too.

I'm a big fan of season 2, and second place would probably be something like season 6, but, honestly, overall, given how good the best parts of it are, I would say season 9 is a candidate to make the top 3 as well...

I found Season 8 to be worst. Maybe because I knew Season 9 was the last that I was super invested and came to like it. But, there were times when I would start watching Season 8 episodes and would stop after 10-15 minutes.

But the finale... eek! Worst episode of the series.

8 is definitely the weakest.

The finale, when you take out the original ending and replace it with the alternate, is still not sensational (though I like the alternate ending - simple and effective - and I don't really care that Robin and Barney break up within five minutes, or whatever, and that Barney goes back to being Barney, so I'm mostly fine with what everybody else hates about it), but is definitely nowhere near the worst episode of even the season, let alone the series. But, yes, with the originally aired ending, it's a candidate for that title in my opinion as well :) - because that part is just so horribly conceived and executed, worse than any other sequence they've ever done on the show...

For the record, my pick for worst episode of season 9 (and possibly the whole series) is The Lighthouse. This, coming from someone who also quite likes season 9, in spite of its flaws...

I was at my parent's when I first saw The Lighthouse and it was the first episode of How I Met Your Mother that my mother saw, and I had to say to her that "it's usually better than this" or something.

I get why people hate it, but I don't. I also think it's pretty funny, which I understand most people don't... Anyway, it's actually one of my favorites of the season! I'm not arguing for it - objectively, it might be bad. I'm just saying I like it. :)
