Season 2 Overkill -- Provenza's sidearm

I'm new to the show so I'm sorry if this has been discussed to death, but the scene with the mob guy using Provenza's weapon to kill the 2nd FBI agent has been bugging me since he doesn't need to chamber a round and the slide doesn't seem to move. Does anyone happen to know what weapon this is supposed to be and does it really work like this? Or is this just a Hollywood thing?

It is a Beretta 92FS. I think it really works by just firing the weapon.

Thanks, I just watched a field stripping video for the weapon on YouTube and, while it is double-action it does have a typical slide action. So it would fire IF a round was already chambered, but the slide would either have poked through the bag or got caught on the bag. My guess is that on the show they've eliminated the safety issues of firing actual weapons and are just adding a flash in post production. Not a problem for me now that I understand what's happening.
