Tasks for rank structure never made sense

Deputy chiefs do admin work. Lieutenants command other officers. Why did a deputy chief interrogate and lieutenants do leg work? At most, Brenda should have been a lieutenant riding herd on some detectives.

reply

IIRC in the first episode it was stated that they wanted to bring in Brenda because she had a reputation for closing cases. She was hired as a deputy chief because policy wouldn't let them bring in an outsider at a lower rank.

reply

That would make sense. It would also justify whatever they paid Brenda. Still, lieutenants doing legwork? Would never happen.

reply

some lieutenants prefer to be more involved and "hands-on" with their cases, and that includes some legwork, so it's not all that far-fetched.
And let's not forget that it's Brenda's own squad, she's the chief, so all her subordinates in her squad basically just does whatever she tells them to do, including her lieutenants, she's the boss of them afterall and delegates them with different tasks, but technically everyone in her squad do some form of legwork.

Old post here, but this is one of my pet peeves. Declaring "its fiction, relax" is an terribly weak bit of justification. GOOD fiction requires that the world in a fictional story remain as close to real norms as it can except for the areas that are specifically intended to depart. This is most obvious in science fiction or fantasy, where the world and people should be normal except where the fantastic elements intervene. However, it applies to less fantastic fiction as well.

I'm sure that different departments in different cities operate differently. We can make that assumption on the Closer and Major Crimes. However, even these shows, on occasion, have noted through dialogue that the Priority Homicide/Major Crime units are "lieutenant heavy." This can be attributed that the unit is intended to be "high profile."

There was also another early episode in which Provenza and Flynn had gone astray, and Pope tells Brenda that was the main reason he brought her to LA and to fill the position of leader of that squad (because the team was not taking orders or protocols seriously).

reply

I'd like to add that this was a special unit, Priority Homicide. We could assume that all those on the team were chosen for it because of their experience and previous record.

Other Lieutenants would probably lead larger units requiring the boss, them, to spend more time on administrative duties.

Lest we forget one of the greatest Lieutenants of them all, Columbo.
