Me and others simply think it's him during a simpler time. When he used to just follow orders and have fun with his life. "The dream he can't have" simply being a normal happy life. I mean the dream theory is pretty strong but I prefer to think with the opening and the closing, he finally decided to be his own man but that could never have worked out. Lovely movie however, might watch it again later on tonight.
