shareNot exactly like A Bittersweet Life, but all these films are from South Korea, and are well worth checking out:
Brotherhood
JSA
Save the Green Planet
The Quiet Family
A Tale of Two Sisters
friend (chingoo) is similar. It's also about korean gangsters, but focuses on 4 friends coming of age...other good korean films:
crying fist
memories of murder
failan
but park chanwook's vengeance films are definitely the best
------------------------------------------
"How do we stop them sir?"
"Kill the pushers"
thanks, ive just watched brotherhood, amazing film, im gonna check out some of the others too. memories of murder looks pretty good. thanks for the recomendations everyone
shareI have yet to see it, but I hear Joint Security Area is amazing. I loved Memories of Murder as well.

Failan A gangster film?! :D What the hell you been watching!
Joint Security Area - yeah, go see it!! 10/10
other good korean films
Samaria
The Isle
Mr Vengeance, good list bro. I haven't seen Crying Fist yet but I cant wait, and Memories is one of the best police dramas ever filmed.
shareMEMORIES OF MURDER... simply one of the best serial killer movie i ever seen.
"There is no Seyser Koze!!!" Gabriel Byrne blunder while filming The Usual Suspects.
My friend it's not Seyser Koze but Keyser Soze. Someone posted a list which includes JSA. This is Joint Security Area by Chan Wook Park, right? Is it good? Is it better than OLDBOY which is a masterpiece.
shareNot better. For me "Oldboy" ist the best movie of the century until now. But JSA is really great.
shaream i the only person who hated Oldboy? i just found it horrendous, apart from the amazing fight scene (you know the one).
i love A Bittersweet Life though
I really liked Oldboy, and thought it was a top notch film, until......
Well, some may think I'm extreme, but while the film was brilliant, when the true point of revenge was revealed, I was so offended that I actually broke my DVD in two and threw it away. Again, amazing film, but some people might find the revenge quite offensive. Just my reaction.
"Do you know what's really scary? You want to forget something. Totally wipe it off your mind. But you never can. It can't go away, you see. And... and it follows you around like a ghost."
I love korean movies and gangster films, but I really didn't like A Bittersweet Life
the fistfights and gunfights were great, but the plot was lame
some other korean movies that I really liked:
Revenge Trilogy (Oldboy especially but Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance not so much)
JSA
Crying Fist
Shiri
Tae Guk Gi
Cut from 3 Extremes was really good, that was by chan-wook park, but the other two movies on the DVD sort of sucked, so I wouldn't recommend buying it
Agreed, the fight scene was good, but the main character was definately not consistent, you would've thought he's hard character
1. Would know how to already use a gun
2. Not make silly mistakes like not having a gd answer for he's boss, or not anticipating that the other boss in the ice rink was going to stab him when he placed he's hand in he's pocket.
Also, for all the talk and mouth he had as a boss, especially when fighting off threat, you would've definately thought he's have some super kung fu skills to go with it, just the main guy in "Married to the mafia", but he got wasted by 3 people in he's room,..also how the heck did he not know they came in and were standing next to him.
Too many inconsistencies, i loved the music, AND the plot, but that's it.
Best korean film i've seen so far, is Daisy, Guns n' Talks, Once upon a time in high school,

Oldboy’s correct—don’t neglect the fact that he is human.
Recommended film:
Exiled [Not Korean]
Edit:
A Dirty Carnival
I think for a film to get that reaction out of anyone is pretty impressive, don't you think?
For the record Oldboy is my favourite film
-We've survived yet again-
-We've lost yet again-

I really loved Oldboy when I 1st saw it, i saw it 2 more times after. But recently, I rewatched it again, & it wasn't as spectacular as I remembered it to be. My brother also felt the same way as me. I guess the style was innovative at that time but rewatching it, you see so many flaws that it doesn't stand the test of time like other classics.
Global Warming, it's a personal decision innit? - Nigel Tufnel
What flaws?
Nothing amazing ever happens here.
Well, for one, the fighting seems very stagey. You can see them wait their turn to do a punch/kick. It wasn't very obvious to me the 1st time I saw it but now, I find it very blatant.

Try Infernal Affairs. You'll see that Scorsese's Deprated isn't exactly original. Good movie though.
shareHeres my list:
A Dirty Carnival
Save the Green Planet
But one that I have just loved recently is NO MERCY FOR THE RUDE.
public enemy is cool
the main fight in it was copied in the final matrix film
No, the matrix guys copied the fight scene from "Nowhere to Hide" not "Public Enemy."
shareI want to more Korean action movies like this. Are there any other Korean action movies with good realistic martial arts scenes like this movie?
I have seen Arahan(poor), City Of The Violence and others. I hope someone can give me list of movies like i described.
Lt. Col. Kojak Slaphead the III of the Bald Brummies Against The Big Footed Conspiracy Party
good thread. i'm going to make note of these films. thanks.
sharei found this film a good watch and stylish but lighter on content. also i didnt like save the green planet. here are my fav korean movies apart from 'the trilogy'
humanist
brotherhood
crying fist
jsa
hope you like them
also considering you liked this one, check out
bangkok dangerous
S. P. L.
They are not Koreans but probably more close to what you are looking for.
[deleted]
yeah you right my memory let me down there
city of violence is on a par with this film
I strongly disagree. City of Violence is no where close to being on par with this film. City of Violence was a let down for me. I thought it would be a lot better.
shareA Bloody Aria was amazing.

"When people do not have a past, they must create myths to suppliment the facts of their existence"
Not "A Dirty Carnival". Boring!
"No. 3" is a great Korean gangster flick.
